Minimally invasive breast biopsy (stereotactic or ultrasound guided) is an alternative to an open surgical procedure. Stereotactic biopsies are performed at Cape Surgery Center and ultrasound-guided biopsies at our diagnostic breast center at the Waldemere Medical Plaza. These procedures are performed by experienced radiologists utilizing the latest vacuum-assisted biopsy device.
Once a breast lump or abnormality is found, a biopsy may be needed to provide an accurate diagnosis. Most biopsies DO NOT turn out to be cancer. However, early diagnosis is the key to the most effective treatment, should breast cancer arise. To schedule an appointment, please call (941) 917-7322.
Minimally invasive breast biopsies are an outpatient procedure. There is minimal pain, scarring and recovery time. The procedure generally takes less than an hour and patients can return to normal activities immediately after. The results are highly accurate and are usually available in 24 hours.
We realize how frightening a biopsy can be. The procedures are performed in a caring, patient-oriented environment. Our breast center nurses are available before and after a biopsy to answer questions and allay fears.
What is Stereotactic Biopsy?
One of the early signs of cancer is something called "calcifications". Suspicious calcifications are small pieces of dried tissue composed of dead or dying cells. These show up as "white" on a mammogram.
A stereotactic biopsy takes pictures of the breast in two dimensions and allows pinpoint placement of a biopsy needle which can remove samples of tissue to determine if a cancer is present. This outpatient procedure is done through a very small needle puncture rather than a true skin incision, thus potentially avoiding surgery. If there is evidence of malignancy, a surgical consultation is in order.
