Breast ultrasound is a noninvasive procedure that is often used in addition to or as a follow-up to mammography. This exam may help determine if a particular area found on a mammogram is solid or fluid filled. Ultrasound can penetrate dense breast tissue and is particularly useful in evaluation of women with fibrocystic breasts.

Ultrasound also helps guide biopsies, needle localizations and cyst aspirations. In these cases, the physician is able to view the needle being inserted in the breast, ensuring that the proper area is being evaluated.
